Synopsis
Migration and immigration are the timely themes of Schaub's documentary, which is set in the remote Schamserberg area of Switzerland. At the beginning of the 20th Century, many of the area's population journeyed to California to find work and feed their families back home. As did the Cantieni family's father, who voyaged to the US for the first time in 1914, and whose letters and photographs provide a fascinating narrative. Now, at the beginning of the 21st Century, the Schamserberg area attracts immigrants from all over the world. Many have left young children behind and talk of their pain. A thought-provoking film on the nature of global emigration, and a reminder that humans' search for a new beginning and a better life is timeless.
